Why I Chose Homemade Formula – And Why You Should Too

Homemade Baby Formula - by EarthyCrunchyMama

Before we dive into this, please know that I think all mothers should exclusively breastfeed. This was my goal and dream since the moment we found out about baby. I have struggled since day one with breastfeeding and if you missed the beginning of my journey, you can find it here. I also want you to understand that this is my personal journey, I do not judge other mamas who have chosen different paths, just encourage you to research before accepting that what’s popular is the best/only option.

Formula is such a touchy subject and not one I ever planned on having to research for myself. However, going back to work and being apart from baby for hours a day has presented it’s challenges with pumping and breastfeeding. I find pumping is so uncomfortable and obviously completely unnatural. Unfortunately, at this point in my mama journey, pumping is a necessity if I want to continue to breastfeed.

I was pumping at work for about a month when I realized I wasn’t getting any more milk out at the end of that month than I did at the beginning, and obviously baby is still growing. The flip side to that is baby had been nursing between 4-6 times a night to compensate for lack of milk through the day. While I want him to exclusively have breast milk and am willing to breastfeed all night, even the 6 times a night wasn’t enough for his growing body. Supplementation has become a necessity. I’ve have been blessed with several mama friends who have so generously given me their extra stash of milk, but baby has plowed through that very quickly and we’re now having to look at other options.

Powered formula – while being the most popular type among mamas – was never an option for us. After my extensive research, I came to the conclusion that there is no good commercial infant formula available. Commercial infant formulas are highly fabricated concoctions composed of milk or soy powders produced by high-temperature processes that overdenature proteins and add many carcinogens. If you haven’t researched the dangers of this type of formula, I encourage you to do you own extensive research before choosing this for your baby. Some parents mistakenly believe that genetically modified soy is the main problem and that buying organic soy formula is protective for their infant. Nothing could be further from the truth.  While organic soy formula does indeed provide a better quality source of soy, organic soy still has the same problems as GM soy – trypsin inhibitors, high levels of phytic acid, and large amounts of hormone disrupting plant estrogens that can devastate baby’s development and hormonal system. Parents wishing to provide the highest quality formula for their baby should breastfeeding not be an option should consider a homemade formula from grassfed raw milk.  Most babies allergic to commercial dairy formula surprisingly have no problem with a homemade raw milk formula and in the rare case where a dairy allergy presents with the homemade milk based formula, a hypoallergenic formula based on homemade broth and pureed meat can be utilized.

After my extensive research, I came to the conclusion that there is no good commercial infant formula available. I became determined to find a healthier alternative for my baby.

With awesome support from our sweet friend Corrie, we decided to go with a variation of the Weston A Price recipe. We found this recipe had a nice balance of essential milk fats, oil fats, and omegas. There is more to the recipe than we’re using, because I’m mixing the bottles half breastmilk/ half formula and baby is almost 5 months old, I wasn’t as concerned about the few dry ingredients listed. If you are solely feeding baby with this recipe, I would recommend the entire full version of the Weston Price recipe.  You can find the full variation of the recipe here.

homemade baby formula - earthycrunchymama.coSo far we’ve been using the formula for a week and have been loving it! As I mentioned above, we are mixing each bottle half with breastmilk so baby is still getting breastmilk in every feeding. He has loved the formula and we haven’t had any adverse effects from it. He’s been sleeping through the night most nights since starting the formula which has been awesome for mama!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Well I’m pretty sure little man is teething! Who knew we would hit this stage so quickly?! 3.5 months seems way too early to me, but I know it’s happening because the poor baby has been fussy and clingy for several days now. Along with our normal bath/peace and calming routine, we’ve been diffusing lavender, and last night, had to add peppermint into the mix. Little man was burning up with a teething fever. After his bath, we heavily diluted peppermint essential oil and applied it along his spine. Within a few minutes he was cooled down and comfortable enough to sleep. We are so thankful for our essential oils!

Are Young Living Essential Oils Organic?

Earthy Crunchy Mama's - Are Young Living Essential Oils Organic?

I get this question all the time, and I completely understand why. In our house, we strive to only eat organic foods and are very conscious of the chemical-content of all of our other purchases. So naturally those who strive to live a similar lifestyle would be concerned about their essential oils; this was a HUGE factor for me in choosing which brand of essential oils to use. Although Young Living’s oils are not certified organic, I feel confident in their quality and am pleased with their lack of chemicals used on the plants and in the soil they grow in.

Here’s Young Living’s Response to this question:

Our oils are not 100% certified organic; however, we know that providing organic products to our members is as important to them as it is to us. That is why we strive to use organic matter in everything we grow, process, and sell. Thus we do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on our farms.

The reason why our oils are not 100% certified organic issues to the fact that we occasionally import some oils from different countries (as many of the plants that produce our oils are only grown in one region in the entire world; Frankincense would be one example). As most of these countries do not have organic standards set or organic standards that match the US standards, we are unable to certify them organic. With this being said, please rest assured, that Young Living® will not accept oils or plants that do not meet our strict standards.

The Young Living therapeutic-grade standard goes beyond organic in purity, scope, and potency. Young Living applauds the ever-growing demand for goods prepared using organic, sustainable, and “green” growing practices. We have long championed cutting-edge natural, organic and low-impact farming and manufacturing methods (i.e. returning distilled compost and bioactivity to our fields). We find these methods essential in our efforts to produce pure essential oils free from contaminants often introduced by chemical pesticides, fertilizers, etc. On the other hand, we have found that “certified organic” does not guarantee that a plant and the oil it produces will be totally free from problems. It’s the sad state of the world that even the best organic farms can be contaminated by toxins, like heavy metals, already in the soil and those still being introduced by polluted air and water.

In our experience what ensures 100 percent purity is our own comprehensive, rigorous, and expert analysis of the finished oil. We would prefer to skip these costly measures and trust a governmental agency to guarantee purity, but it wouldn’t be prudent to leave something so important in less experienced hands.

Furthermore, for Young Living’s therapeutic-grade standard, freedom from toxins, heavy metals, and chemicals is just the beginning. Equally important is an oil’s optimal therapeutic profile of phytochemicals, antioxidants, etc. Our focus on activity and results is what guarantees our customers the bioactivity, potency, and living energy whereon we have built our unrivaled reputation. Sometimes we utilize herbs that are “certified organic,” but as often as not we must include herbs that do not and can not fit in the current scope of this standard. Sometimes the best herbs are cultivated in climates and countries where organic certification is still decades away (i.e. frankincense, etc.). Sometimes the best herbs aren’t farmed but achieve their optimal potency growing in the wild (i.e. Palo Santo, etc.). The Young Living therapeutic-grade standard embraces all of these opportunities which is why we remain convinced that we go beyond all existing world standards, including organic.

NO Expiration Date on Young Living Oils

expiredate

Pure, from the ground, plants distilled into oil DO NOT expire and can last for centuries. Essential oil is not a perishable item. If oils come from plants (as long as they are contained) they maintain bio-activity, safety, and efficacy. They don’t grow mold, yeast, or mildew because they don’t contain water and have antimicrobial, anti-viral properties.

Young Living has a date stamp on every label; yr/m/d. They stamp when the product is bottled and can trace back to a particular batch of essential oil (through the seed to seal process) with that stamp. (Read about the seed to seal process here.)

OIL LABELS v1.1Not even heat can affect the molecular properties of the oils. Heat will only affect the rapidity of the evaporation process. Evaporation does not affect its molecular properties, it will only affect the volume. In a pure oil, the monoterpenes are going to evaporate first (because they are lighter molecules), and the sesquiterpenes will remain. When a person leaves a bottle open and oil has evaporated slightly, it was the monoterpenes evaporating. They’ll even evaporate slowly through the plastic caps and leave the sesquiterpenes behind. But that’s ok, the sesquiterpenes are the powerhouse of the oil. They’re the bioactive power of the oil.

Essential oils have been unearthed in jars in Egypt and were still usable and sesquiterpene rich. Dr. Woolley found frankincense resin in the sands of Oman and there was still oil in the resin even after 65+ years of being buried. Resin itself can stay in the Omani market for 5-10 years and still maintain its properties.

So think again if your oils have an expiration date on them. Question the quality of your product! Remember that pure, from the ground, plants distilled into oil DO NOT expire!

Why Young Living over Whole Foods?

yl vs wf-

WHOLE FOODS IS HALF THE PRICE AND SMELLS FINE…

The oils from Young Living are 100% pure. Nothing added. Nothing taken away. They are not laced with synthetics that are harmful and dangerous, and they are not lab replicated. They are harvested directly from the plant. This gives peace of mind that even a 100% organic label from another company can’t give me. Additionally, Young Living is the ONLY essential oil company in the world that owns their own farms to grow their crop. Every other company buys their product at some point. Young Living tests and maintains pure, organic, therapeutic grade from the time the seed is put into the ground to the time it’s sealed into the bottle.

Therapeutic grade oils are almost never sold in retails stores. They might be organic, but they distill it in a way that is cheaper and faster (hence the cheaper price tag) which kills the compounds that make up the molecules; meaning that the healing properties are gone.  So, don’t expect healing properties from them. When oils are distilled at low temp, low pressure, the healing properties are preserved, but it takes a lot of time and a lot more money to do it that way.

FDA Says Only 5% of Ingredient = ‘pure’
In her book Their Leaves for Healing: The Divine Gift of Plants That Heal, Elizabeth Flores writes that

Only 90% of what is sold in the United States as ‘pure’ essential oil is fragrance-grade and diluted. (The FDA has determined that a product need contain only 5% of the ingredient on the label in order to use the word pure.) These oils are found on the shelves of many health food stores and at online discount houses. They may be less expensive, but they will not be useful for healing.

YoungLiving oils are safe to apply, diffuse AND ingest… because they are 100% organic. If you see “do not ingest” on the bottle, run in the other direction because you’re basically buying it for the smell only.

Young Living essential oils are:

•    100% pure
•    Sourced only from known botanical species
•    Sustainably grown and harvested
•    Grown on chemical-free lands in carefully nourished soil (organic)
•    Unmatched throughout the essential oils industry
•    So pure and natural, they’re used and recommended by integrative health professionals around the world
